NYC Tags 1979-82
From 1979-82, I attended New York University Graduate Film School. Zephyr was my boyfriend, and Patti Astor was my creative collaborator. Zephyr, aka Andy Witten, was “King of the Line” and introduced me to his graffiti world. When Zephyr painted “Major Burners” with my name, I became “Down by Law!” Zephyr dubbed my photo scrapbook “The Tipster Chronicles.” It was my visual diary of friends, lovers, tags, burners, and memories. Zeph taught me the secret language of tagging and how to decipher the code.
One night at a party, I ran into Keith Haring and told him about the pictures I had taken of his subway chalk drawings. Keith asked me, “What station do you live near, and what train do you ride?”
