I am a photographer, filmmaker, writer, and world traveler. I'd like to think that my photography style is quirky, honest, and uniquely mine. I've been told that my images carry a sense of whimsy, humor, and lightness of being, making them delightful explorations of the world around us. I honed my craft at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1976-79 alongside Rolling Stone Magazine photographers Chester Simpson and Jeff Good. At art school, I learned to shoot from the hip—rarely looking through the lens to compose shots. There was spontaneity and freedom we all had of capturing moments that ended up being culturally significant. Five decades later, I continue viewing my world from behind the camera.
Since the age of ten, I have always carried a camera. First, I had a Kodak Instamatic. By high school, I carried a 35mm Canon with multiple lenses. In art school, I was given a small Canon half-frame. At film school, I shot with a 16mm Bolex and then a Super 8mm movie camera. In Hollywood, I started shooting 35mm film and Polaroid instant pictures, because Polaroids were what the crew used for continuity on set and there was an instant satisfaction. As I traveled, I strapped three cameras across my body; one film, one digital, and a video camera. When I dropped my unexposed film in a cow poo gutter in Varanasi, India, while trying to load it into my camera, I switched completely to digital. I still carry a camera with me everywhere I go because now my phone has five high quality lenses and video!
Anita Rosenberg Photography began as a portfolio of my work and quickly morphed into a Photography Memoir, sharing stories and context to my lifetime of images. I invite you to view the pictures or read the text or do both and enjoy my journey!
